[ Today, the Nishikiyama Family finally receives recognition for its rapid growth and contributions to the Tojo Clan. Months and months later, and after having tediously weeded away at the bad apples, Nishikiyama's men have pulled their acts together.

His new path as a yakuza had done plenty in providing them an incentive to obey; first out of fear, then out of respect. Shindo and Kanda do plenty to keep their fellow members in line— not out of selflessness, but because the two of them are actively clamoring for the title of their patriarch's captain. Meanwhile, Mine's funding ensures their family's not doomed for the dirt. Strange, though, how Nishikiyama himself avoids spending any more of Mine's money than he has to. He's been extremely careful with the amounts that Mine's deposited and even leaned on him to stabilize the cash flow that's attained organically and independently.

After applause rises from the Tojo Clan congregation, Nishikiyama returns to his seat at the tail of giving a speech. He's been placed somewhere in the rows dedicated to the Tojo family patriarchs; separated from Mine by protocol, but certainly not by choice. The seat beside him frees up quickly, and Kazama soon replaces Nishikiyama in front of the gathering to speak in turn.

It's when Kazama is speaking that Nishikiyama locks gazes with Mine from where he sits. Far across the venue, over a sea of yakuza, Mine only one in hundreds of them. His patriarch's eyes are sharp like a cat's are. Shoulders back and poised. The corner of his mouth faintly pulls upwards, bizarrely derisive and pleased at the same time. Nishikiyama is in a position where he needn't explain or make much sense to his subordinates. He knows that. The smirk he spares him is for Mine to do what he will with, and as fleeting as it'd been, Nishikiyama turns to face the front, listening as the meeting comes to a gradual close. ]

[ Nishikiyama observes how many are moving to the doors and chattering about the izakayas or hostess clubs they'll be hitting up later this evening. Similarly, he observes that Mine is moving away from the glob of Nishikiyama Family members who pool together and in aims of waiting in the courtyard. He finds that charming for some reason.

Mine only seems to watch him, most of the time. Maybe because they're the same age, or because they've seen some of the truth of one another. Whatever the reason is, Nishikiyama's found himself sort of fond of it, and after the exit wave of patriarchs allows him, he drifts a little closer. Looks from Shimano and other family heads pass over Mine as he bows, wondering why he'd fallen behind and strayed from his pack. They don't mind enough to stop or say anything, though, seeing as how Nishikiyama himself doesn't mind it; after all, he's half learned to expect it from Mine by now.

It's not a terrible thing to have someone glued to his hip again. He'd missed the companionship he'd taken for granted in the past. ]

Who're you?

[ Nishikiyama's words are playful and sarcastic when he is eventually close enough to be heard. There's too much familiarity in them to suggest to anyone he doesn't recognize the person before him. ]

[ When he responds, Nishikiyama wonders if Mine had even recognized his earlier tone. Funny how with any other person, he’d most definitely want them in their place. With Mine, though, he seems to be leaving room for playful pushback or banter. ]

Don’t just answer me all dry like that.

[ How he’d answered Nishikiyama’s teasing, without hesitation or taking offense. Mine’s name and congratulations are put in the back of the remaining patriarchs’ heads but, before long, the two yakuza are left to a relatively open space alongside the stragglers who’d maybe seen similar goals of getting close to their leaders.

Nishikiyama knows the rest of his men are waiting for them. He catches glimpse of Kanda’s bald head when Kazama, of course Kazama, passes Mine and himself another weighted look on his way out. Cane in hand. Face like judgmental stone.

The smirk across from Mine flinches once before regaining its usual burn. ]

It’s your success too. Celebration seems appropriate enough, but time to myself today’s a little short. Can you fit it between now and the Nishikiyama Family dinner later on? You didn’t forget.

[ Mine hardly needs to affirm because Nishikiyama already knows he hasn’t forgotten. It’s all formality, a verbal reminder that he’s a patriarch with matters a patriarch is obligated to attend. ]

[ Mine would find that Nishikiyama had been looking at him too for some reason; he hadn't expected Mine's gaze to lock with his own. There's a delay in response when brown eyes find the windshield once more. Road signs pass them when Mine drives wherever he's decided they'll go kill time. ]

To replace Matsushige? [ —Nishikiyama's former captain, right. ] I'm not in a hurry to consider anybody.

[ The truth of it is frank. Nishikiyama props his elbow on an armrest, sinking further back into the shotgun seat. Without looking away from the rolling Tokyo cityscape, he prompts Mine for his thoughts: ]

Do you already have an opinion on it?

Hn.

[ Kazama had been the one to decide before. Like a fucked up parcel, his former father figure had passed Matsushige down his way, labeled him a "capable" yakuza, and assigned him a title. He'd had to be fucking with him. ]

Decisions like that are based on a patriarch's favoritism. Not too different from the world outside. [ Nishikiyama watches the people in other cars when he answers Mine. ] I'd need someone with their shit together, and strong enough in a fight to hold their own.

[ Loyalty is something else he wants, but he also doesn't believe in it anymore. How can he ask it of anyone else if he can't even offer it himself? Nishikiyama senses what the other is hinting at— subtle interest perhaps piqued by Mine's past experience in the capitalistic shark pit of struggle. Climbing is a habit. ]

But before you think of how you'll beat them to it, Mine, let me remind you that after a certain incident with the last one, I'm not looking for a captain.

[ He looks at Mine though, voice falling quieter.

His tongue is thick in his own mouth. Nishikiyama swallows, and his eyes move to Mine's thumb on the wheel; the Rolex on his wrist that likely costs more than two times worth of someone's yearly salary. ]

Of course they wouldn't, because they're idiots. They want to take what they can get.

[ He doesn't hesitate to insult his underlings.

Though the other may feel Nishikiyama gazing at him, Mine's eyes are still fixed on the freeway, perhaps seeing beyond what the blue road signs present. The opportunities, the potential of what could be; still, the patriarch's resistance meets him. Betraying prediction, Nishikiyama finds he's unable to follow Mine's next train of thought. The question catches him off guard. ]

...I'm not looking. Not for anybody.

[ Again.

His fingernails curl against one of the armrests beside him. A point is made clear: Nishikiyama will not actively seek anyone out. He can't bring himself to leave it at that, though. Pupils falling to the gas meter, leveled carefully at the speed limit, Nishikiyama voices one fleeting thought aloud. ]

But maybe that's just a really fucked up way of saying I'd want someone to show me I'm wrong for it.

[ He's said too much. He knows it immediately when the words are left hanging in the air like a sliver of vapor. ]

[ Nishikiyama's eyes lift from the meter to Mine's. What he says in that moment confirms what he'd perhaps wanted all along; motives for actions that hadn't made much sense to him otherwise. Since the day they'd met, Mine had yet to slip up. He hadn't with a gun to his head, or even when left unattended behind closed doors. He'd always done what he said he would when he would. He'd always followed up afterward.

If Mine is making efforts to disarm and play Nishikiyama a fool, he's certainly doing a great job at it. What the fresh patriarch had hoped from somebody, anybody since Kiryu, is trapped in the confines of the car just across from him. Nishikiyama's gaze is averted first. It's easier to watch Mine through the rearview mirror.

Why had he known exactly what to say now? He doesn't want to ask him. Nishikiyama doesn't want to deny or fight what's happening, because he might kill it the way he's killed anything good that's happened to him yet. He knows he'll be left by himself, beneath someone's shoe again sooner or later. Whether what Mine's offering him is real or fake: Nishikiyama can't stand being by himself. Not right now. It's a joke to think he'd make it long enough to last Kiryu's entire sentence. Especially to think that things could ever go back to the way they were with what he's done.

Nishikiyama's hand finds Mine's leg when the freeway is straight. He squeezes it without speaking. ]

[ Nishikiyama's hand stays there, thumb pressed to the other's thigh. Mine doesn't flinch away from him. He doesn't swat him off, or deny the touch. Without anything other than the soft sound of air sucked back through his throat, Nishikiyama doesn't know what any of it means. Why doesn't he act? Is the inaction simply because it feels out of bounds for Mine to refuse?

The silence is so loud now that it's maddening. What does Mine want? ]

—Say something.

[ How Nishikiyama hates the quiet. His paranoid mind will bury actuality in an instant if Mine allows it. ]

I only want what's actually mine to have.

[ It's a clear enough answer for him, Nishikiyama thinks. A conditional that emphasizes both the reason he'd hesitated just as much as why he hadn't let the others come close to him. Out of everyone else, Mine may know the most about Nishikiyama at this point; he has the most insight into his actions. Even Kazama and Kashiwagi hardly recognize him since Yuko's passing.

Mine's leg slips a little closer. It's tilted somewhat toward him, and Nishikiyama feels like he might choke should any more silence haunt him further. ]

You have to tell me what that means.

[ He'll need to tell Nishikiyama whether he can have him. ]

[ Nishikiyama will ask Mine why another day.

Hearing this now, that the other man wants him to want him— that's plenty. Enough for him. Nishikiyama's fingers graze the top of the leg he hasn't let go of— Mine's thigh. He hardly sees the road through the windshield anymore. It's all just motion and color. ]

I want you.

[ And it horrifies him. It'd been the truth Nishikiyama had struggled to voice and accept. Saying it so plainly, however, allows some room for relief. A weight has been lifted from him, and Nishikiyama swallows a thick knot that'd been caught in his throat. ]

Take us somewhere— I don't want this to be in the car.

[ From the parking spot to the lobby to now the hallway leading to the suite, Nishikiyama's yet to say anything else. Like a stray cat in an unknown alley, his eyes are simply observing their surroundings. Carefully. Since admitting his desire back in the car, he's more conscious of himself and his actions. He sweeps his own jacket from the side and slips his copy of the room's card key into a designer's wallet he'd purchased. The door spills the well-furnished suite to them with a quiet click. ]

...

[ The patriarch ducks his head lower when he enters, like someone's sidepiece nervous to be caught in a morning tabloid. Once inside, though, he sheds the jacket from his shoulders and hooks it on the coat rack. Nishikiyama's already thinking of what's coming next. Surely Mine understands?

Further into the room and for the first time since their ride over, Nishikiyama faces Mine properly. He's smaller-looking without the padded shoulders of his suit. Still, he retains a prickly atmosphere, but within the intimate space of the suite, he's less bent on keeping up.

Until that door closes, he thinks. Will Mine say something to him first? Will he act first? Who knows. This entire precedent had been sprung out of nowhere.

Nishikiyama's eyes are hard and dark. They dare Mine to act on what they'd said during the drive over. ]

[ He doesn't like the quiet, and Mine isn't breaking it. ]

No one else is coming in, are they?

[ Nishikiyama doesn't know if there are caterers, hotel workers, or otherwise scheduled to come in and bring them each course of an expensive meal. As he waits for the other's answer to fill the space, he sees Mine's fingers sinking into a tight gap beneath his tie. How strange to see that button undone— even in his own home, he'd hardly loosened up in Nishikiyama's presence. ]

We don't have a lot of time.

[ It's only a lunch, he remembers. The amber lighting of the suite makes it easy to forget and think it's night. After their earlier conversation, Nishikiyama finds that he isn't hungry. Not for food. ]

[ Interesting.

There are all sorts of reasons Mine might not want the additional company of suite staff, but Nishikiyama doesn't question it. With the confirmation comes his effort to undress— calloused fingers tucking into the knot of his tie and pulling it free with a hiss of fabric. Its silver slides over his shoulders, and after only slipping three buttons or so apart, he pulls his black dress shirt out of his waistband and reels everything up and over his head in a boyish way.

The collar of his shirt teases hair product. It threatens the dark locks Nishikiyama had carefully slicked back earlier that morning. Popping free of his top, far less thoughtfully than Mine, he tosses his clothing on the back of a chair. There's a vividly red koi fish on his back— one that Mine had only seen in passing during their trip to the bathhouse before. The dips and divots of muscle on him are tense. He's not relaxed, though he's feigning experience. Things are different when one's partner is a woman, he thinks; there's awkwardness now in that Nishikiyama's never acted on an attraction to another man before. He'll pay it no mind. Besides, it's not like Mine will reject him.

Nishikiyama closes the space between them in silence. With a silky bed not too far behind them, Nishikiyama herds Mine further back. He doesn't know where to put his hands at first, but they eventually place themselves on the other man's hips and squeeze. The next bit feels as if it happens slower. Nishikiyama's eyes are shut but his mouth is open when he kisses Mine, and he tastes their preferred brands of differing cigarettes when he has him on his lips. It tastes good; no, it's Mine himself that tastes good.

Nishikiyama ushers him against the edge of the mattress. ]
